Uninstalling parsec game streaming11/20/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Unreal made a splashy entrance into VFX with the Mandalorian, but both them and Unity have been hosting regular industry developer days that are aimed at developers who want to use the engines to develop custom applications that would otherwise have typically been handled by CAD software.įor the architecture and construction industry for instance, they've both invested in developer tooling specifically tailored for streaming and importing architectural models (Unity Reflect and Unreal Datasmith). One fundamental market advantage that they both have over say an in-house engine like Frostbite, is that they don't have to limit themselves to the gaming markets. It's interesting to see the huge investment in these publicly accessible game engines, and I'm curious to see if AAA studios that develop in house engines will be able to keep up. When I eventually did upgrade then I could switch to playing the local copy that I already had for an even better experience. Streaming could potentially let me play something like Cyberpunk 2077 and the fact that my desktop sucks wouldn't matter. I could potentially see doing that in situations similar to our current GPU supply problem where I have a 10 year old computer, a really crappy GPU, and no way to upgrade my system to something that can actually play any recent titles. You just get to play the games you already own in the cloud. The only one I've seen that I could see myself ever using so far is Nvidia's version which is free. I rarely pay more than $20 for a AAA title and I never pay a subscription for it. ![]() Local copy generally has lower latency, higher resolution and graphics settings, better accessibility (don't need an internet connection to play it), and if the company goes out of business, you can still fire up your local copy and play it. It's an inferior experience compared to owning a local copy for a number of reasons so it should be proportionally cheaper. I disagree unless Streaming becomes dramatically cheaper than owning. ![]()
